Uncertainty Characterisation in Remotely Sensed Soil Moisture

چکیده
Cover: A convective thunderstorm arrives near the small town of Hombori (Mali) during the AMMA field campaign (August 2005). This region is located in the Sahel, a transition zone between the Sahara and the Sudanian Savannas and stretches across the African continent. In this region, the spatial distribution of soil moisture affects the regional climate system including the spatial distribution of precipitation. The author would like to thank Françoise Guichard and Laurent Kergoat for providing the cover photo (© CNRS)

Recent Advances on Soil Moisture Data Assimilation
This study reviews recent progress on soil moisture data assimilation. Data assimilation is a process of merging observations with a system dynamic model to provide an improved estimate of the states of the environment. The application of data assimilation in hydrology is relatively new, however, rapid progress has been made in the last decade or so with the available remotely sensed soil moist...
متن کاملAn unmixing algorithm for remotely sensed soil moisture
[1] We present an unmixing method, based on genetic algorithm-soil-vegetationatmosphere-transfer modeling to extract subgrid information of soil and vegetation from remotely sensed soil moisture (downscaled; e.g., soil hydraulic properties, area fractions of soil-vegetation combinations, and unmixed soil moisture time series) that most land surface models use. The unmixing method was evaluated ...
متن کاملA Novel Method for Quantifying Value in Spaceborne Soil Moisture Retrievals
A novel methodology is introduced for quantifying the added value of remotely sensed soil moisture products for global land surface modeling applications. The approach is based on the assimilation of soil moisture retrievals into a simple surface water balance model driven by satellite-based precipitation products. Filter increments (i.e., discrete additions or subtractions of water suggested b...
متن کاملThe Role of Remotely Sensed Soil Moisture to Predict Surface Water Elevation at the Watershed Scale in Korea
Soil moisture is one of the most important key physical parameters in hydrological and environmental processes. During the past decade, remote sensing measurements have been widely used to provide mean surface soil moisture on a large spatial scale because conventional ground based measurements are not always available and require more time and cost. However, very few studies have been conducte...
متن کاملRemotely Sensed Soil Moisture over Australia from AMSR-E
Soil moisture can significantly influence atmospheric evolution. However the soil moisture state predicted by land surface models, and subsequently used as the boundary condition in atmospheric models, is often unrealistic. New remote sensing technologies are able to observe surface soil moisture at the scales and coverage required by numerical weather prediction (NWP), and there is potential t...
